A message from Alan Roth... In the early 1990s, I decided to change careers and go into the world of filmmaking. It was a crazy decision at the time. I went back to school to complete my undergraduate degree at Cleveland State University. In the process, I took the full range of photography classes. My teacher was Masumi Hayashi, who not only taught the basics of photography, but introduced us to the ideas of the image. She became a friend of mine and an influential mentor. On August 17, 2006, she was shot and killed by a 29-year old neighbor from the next apartment after she complained (again) about his loud stereo. |

In 1995, while completing my studies for my undergraduate degree, I produced a video for an independent study course for my degree in 'the study of the moving image.' This video focuses on Masumi's photo project about the World War II Japanese Internment Camps. She was born in the Gila River Internment camp. "Re/collecting/memory" was very much a learning experience for me and I did not distribute this video after I made it. It was one of my early documentary works in a pre-digital era. |
